Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is a treatment method being used to reduce pain, swelling, and recovery time. This increasingly popular treatment works well for soft tissue injuries, muscle spasms, and even for athletes who want quicker recovery from workouts.
This treatment is performed in our office and typically takes only a few minutes. Electrodes are placed on the skin over the affected area, and an electrical current is transmitted into the soft tissue or muscle. The level of current used depends on the injury, its location, and the depth of the therapy. This electrical current causes the muscles to experience very small but quick contractions. Patients may feel a prickly or tingling sensation during the treatment, which usually subsides after the machine is turned off or shortly afterward. Many patients find the sensation enjoyable.
Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) causes tiny muscle contractions, helping them to relax and relieve pain and spasms. It also triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain relievers, and helps clear metabolic waste for better nutrient delivery and faster healing. Commonly used on back and neck muscles, EMS benefits many body areas and is effective for both acute and chronic pain. If you are experiencing pain or have a recent injury, ask your chiropractor about EMS.
