What Is Spinal Decompression, and Who Is It For?

How non-surgical spinal decompression takes pressure off a bulging or herniated disc, what a session feels like and who should talk it through first.

If a disc problem is behind your back, neck or leg pain, someone has probably mentioned spinal decompression. Here is what it is and who tends to be a good fit.

What It Does

Your discs sit between the bones of your spine and work like cushions. When one bulges or herniates, it can press on a nearby nerve, and that pressure is often where the pain comes from. Decompression uses a motorized table to stretch the spine gently, in slow cycles of pulling and easing off. The aim is to take pressure off the disc and the nerve so the area has room to heal.

What a Session Feels Like

You lie on a padded table fully clothed, with a harness at your hips for the low back or a cradle for the neck. The table pulls and relaxes in slow cycles. It should feel like a gentle stretch, so tell the doctor if anything hurts. Afterward you can go back to your day.

Who It Can Help

Decompression is built for problems that start at a disc:

  • Bulging or herniated discs
  • Sciatica that starts at a disc in the low back
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Neck or low back pain tied to pressure on a disc

Who Should Talk It Through First

Some people need a different plan, or at least a conversation first. That includes pregnancy, a recent spinal fracture, advanced osteoporosis, past spinal surgery with hardware and some other medical conditions. Every new patient starts with an exam, plus X-rays when they are needed, before anything goes on the table.

How It Fits Into a Plan

Decompression rarely works alone. Here it is usually paired with chiropractic adjustments and rehab exercises that strengthen the muscles around the spine, plus posture work so the pressure does not build back up. Dallas Lifestyle Management is part of the Disc Centers of America, a network of clinics built around non-surgical decompression for disc pain.

If disc pain is slowing you down, book an exam and we will find out whether decompression makes sense for you.
